What is Garcinia cambogia?

Garcinia cambogia is a small fruit that resembles a pumpkin. It is native to India and parts of Asia. Extract from this fruit and rind is popular in many natural weight loss products. The extract is hydroxycitric acid (HCA), claimed to suppress appetite and enhance fat-burning.

photoThe theory behind garcinia cambogia is that HCA inhibits an enzyme called citrate lyase. This extract helps turns excess carbohydrates into fat. By inhibiting this enzyme, it is believed the body burns the extra carbs. In extensive animal studies, garcinia cambogia was found to reduce food intake by suppressing appetite, as well as to decrease body fat.

Some double-blind studies using garcinia cambogia and a placebo showed the HCA group as doubling or tripling weight loss over a 12-week period as compared to the control group, other studies showed a less promising result.

The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published such a study that used a daily dose of 1500 mg of HCA over a 12-week period on healthy, overweight adults. At the end of the study, the group receiving garcinia cambogia did not see statistically different weight loss from the control group.

However, this study has been criticized by some, with the claim that the high-fiber diet used in the trial likely interfered with the body’s ability to absorb HCA. Unfortunately, the study did not test the subjects to see whether HCA was found in the cells where it becomes active.

Garcinia cambogia reportedly does not have any known adverse effects in healthy adults.  

There are some people who are advised not to take it. According to experts, this includes children, pregnant and lactating women, those diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, and people with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia disease.

      Garcinia Cambogia Side Effects on Diabetes

      Garcinia cambogia extract, specifically the active ingredient of hydroxycitric acid (HCA), has been shown to reduce blood sugar levels. If not taken properly and under the supervision of a medical doctor or trained pharmacist, this could cause health issues.

        Garcinia Cambogia Side Effects to Liver?

        There is some concern that Garcinia Cambogia may have side effects on the liver. Here is what we’ve found on this.

        The overview for Garcinia cambogia extract / Hydroxycitric Acid states that toxicology studies resulted in no toxicity or deaths in animals at doses of HCA 5000 mg/kg – equivalent to about 350 g of HCA, or 233 times the maximum recommended dosage of 1500 mg / day of HCA.

        There is also a lot of research suggesting there is no evidence demonstrating that hepatotoxicity developed was associated with hydroxycitric acid / HCA derived from garcinia cambogia rind.

        There was once case of fatal liver failure where someone was taking Singulair and two other dietary supplements, one which contained garcinia.

        Consult your doctor as needed. It is generally believed that the isolated case was due to either the combination of other ingredients all together, and that the garcinia cambogia extract side effects to the liver are not an issue when taking at the recommended doses.

          Garcinia Cambogia Gives You Constipation?


          aiMIWaZ43pflOne of the possible side effects of Garcinia Cambogia could be constipation. We haven’t found this to be a major complaint.

          In fact, in the 15+ clinical studies with over 900 participants, only very mild reactions were documented include: dizziness, dry mouth, and nausea and diarrhea.

          While it’s possible garcinia cambogia extract could make you constipated, it’s not a commonly reported issue. To be honest, it didn’t turn up much in our research.
