What is Garcinia cambogia?

Garcinia cambogia is a small fruit that resembles a pumpkin. It is native to India and parts of Asia. Extract from this fruit and rind is popular in many natural weight loss products. The extract is hydroxycitric acid (HCA), claimed to suppress appetite and enhance fat-burning.

photoThe theory behind garcinia cambogia is that HCA inhibits an enzyme called citrate lyase. This extract helps turns excess carbohydrates into fat. By inhibiting this enzyme, it is believed the body burns the extra carbs. In extensive animal studies, garcinia cambogia was found to reduce food intake by suppressing appetite, as well as to decrease body fat.

Some double-blind studies using garcinia cambogia and a placebo showed the HCA group as doubling or tripling weight loss over a 12-week period as compared to the control group, other studies showed a less promising result.

The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published such a study that used a daily dose of 1500 mg of HCA over a 12-week period on healthy, overweight adults. At the end of the study, the group receiving garcinia cambogia did not see statistically different weight loss from the control group.

However, this study has been criticized by some, with the claim that the high-fiber diet used in the trial likely interfered with the body’s ability to absorb HCA. Unfortunately, the study did not test the subjects to see whether HCA was found in the cells where it becomes active.

Garcinia cambogia reportedly does not have any known adverse effects in healthy adults.

There are some people who are advised not to take it. According to experts, this includes children, pregnant and lactating women, those diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, and people with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia disease.

(In the case of Alzheimer’s patients, it is thought HCA might form acetylcholine in the brain, while diabetics could be affected by HCA’s tendency to lower blood sugar.)

images (3)In healthy adults this latter effect can curb cravings for sweets and carbohydrates.

Garcinia cambogia is usually sold in capsule form, standardized to include a percentage of HCA, the active ingredient. Only brands standardized to 50% or greater HCA are generally recommended.

For maximum effect take one or more capsules 30-60 minutes before breakfast, lunch, and dinner on an empty stomach.

Some manufacturers claim garcinia cambogia must build up in the system before the full benefits can be realized. It has also been suggested that HCA might help people who have already attained their ideal weight to maintain it.

People who are considering augmenting a healthy diet and exercise regimen with herbal aids like HCA should see their physicians for personalized advice.

    Effects of Taking Appetite Suppressants

images (4)No one likes to feel hungry. We all know, by now, that starvation diets do not work. Sure, you may lose weight, but you’ll gain them all back. What good is that?

As a result, there is a great demand for weight loss solutions today. The fad diets are popular choices for those who are looking for quick solutions. These diets are associated with dangerous side effects and are not the healthiest options. For some people, the appetite suppressants are safe and fast solutions for weight loss.

One of the most famous appetite suppressants is Garcinia Cambogia. Its benefits are documented in numerous studies.

Read on to see what effects does this appetite suppressant have on our bodies.

    Benefits of appetite suppressant treatment

The short-term use of appetite suppressants has been shown to modestly reduce health risks for obese individuals. These suppressants can:

    • Lower blood cholesterol

    • Lower blood pressure

    • Decrease insulin resistance

    Lower blood cholesterol

Garcinia-Cambogia-ReviewsCholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that’s found in all cells of the body.

Your body needs some cholesterol to make hormones, vitamin D, and substances that help you digest foods. Your body makes all the cholesterol it needs. However, cholesterol also is found in some of the foods you eat.

High blood cholesterol is a condition in which you have too much cholesterol in your blood. By itself, the condition usually has no signs or symptoms. Thus, many people don’t know that their cholesterol levels are too high.

Lowering your cholesterol may slow, reduce, or even stop the occurrence of artery and heart diseases. It also may reduce the risk of plaque rupturing and causing dangerous blood clots.

Garcinia cambogia stops the citrate lyase enzyme from transforming sugars and fats and blocks fat production and storage. At the same time, it reduces the amount of fat in the blood stream. It lowers production of bad cholesterol and increases the production of good cholesterol.

In addition to keeping cholesterol in check, Garcinia cambogia also lowers blood pressure. Both cholesterol and blood pressure impact mood, heart health and quality of life.

    Lower blood pressure

For some people, low blood pressure can signal an underlying problem, especially when it drops suddenly or is accompanied by signs and symptoms such as:

    • Dizziness or lightheadedness

    • Fainting (syncope)

    • Lack of concentration

    • Blurred vision

    • Nausea

    • Fatigue

    • Thirst

    When to see a doctor?

draft_lens20661034module166178630photo_1361203426990--‚ÄčIn many instances, low blood pressure isn't serious. If you have consistently low readings but feel fine, your doctor is likely to monitor you during routine exams.

Even occasional dizziness or lightheadedness may be a relatively minor problem. In these situations, it's not a matter so much of how far, but of how quickly, your blood pressure drops.

Still, it's important to see your doctor if you experience any signs or symptoms of hypotension. They sometimes can point to more serious problems. It can be helpful to keep a record of your symptoms, when they occur and what you were doing at the time.

    Decrease insulin resistance

Let’s examine insulin, an important and somewhat infamous appetite-related hormone.

Insulin’s main role is to remove glucose from your bloodstream. The more you eat, the more glucose enters the bloodstream and the more insulin your pancreas releases to lower blood glucose. At least, that’s how insulin is supposed to work.

But, over time cells resist insulin if they’ve encountered frequently high insulin levels. When this happens insulin can’t do its job, blood glucose remains high, and the pancreas releases even more insulin.

Unfortunately, high insulin levels increase feelings of hunger.

To combat this effect, some appetite-suppressing ingredients are said to decrease insulin resistance.

Fortunately, appetite suppressants that regulate hormones generally cause only minor side effects. Common garcinia cambogia side effects include nausea or headaches.

    Conclusions

Some mild side-effects like headaches and nausea can occur. As the above mentioned research states, garcinia cambogia is safe to use for most people.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding moms should avoid taking it. Not enough is known about the use of garcinia during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use.

Having taken all the facts into effect, garcinia cambogia extract is a safe, efficient and very potent supplement that will speed up your weight loss process.

Garcinia Cambogia Side Effects on Diabetes

Garcinia cambogia extract, specifically the active ingredient of hydroxycitric acid (HCA), has been shown to reduce blood sugar levels. If not taken properly and under the supervision of a medical doctor or trained pharmacist, this could cause health issues.

Happy-girl-jumping-in-air-with-garcinia-combogiaThere have been some reports that people with Type 2 Diabetes have been able to lower their insulin treatments because the garcinia extract can provide the similar effect. But without any clear medical study to back this up, we strongly suggest that you consult with your doctor before use.

It is suggested that glucose metabolism might be able to be improved by lowering serum insulin levels. HCA treatment was found to delay and reduce intestinal glucose absorption (in rats).

So, the current thought is that the side effects of Garcinia Cambogia extract on people with diabetes are not bad. They should be handled with care and medical advice. Adjustments may be needed to your treatment plans or the dosages of garcinia cambogia extract.

If you are diabetic, please approach with caution and consult your doctor before starting a regiment.

Garcinia Cambogia Side Effects to Liver?

There is some concern that Garcinia Cambogia may have side effects on the liver. Here is what we’ve found on this.

The overview for Garcinia cambogia extract / Hydroxycitric Acid states that toxicology studies resulted in no toxicity or deaths in animals at doses of HCA 5000 mg/kg – equivalent to about 350 g of HCA, or 233 times the maximum recommended dosage of 1500 mg / day of HCA.

garcinia-cambogia-dr-ozThere is concern about people taking certain combination weight loss supplements and the possibility of severe or fatal hepatotoxicity developing. Hepatotoxicity implies “chemical driven liver damage” according to wikipedia.org.

There is also a lot of research suggesting there is no evidence demonstrating that hepatotoxicity developed was associated with hydroxycitric acid / HCA derived from garcinia cambogia rind.

There was once case of fatal liver failure where someone was taking Singulair and two other dietary supplements, one which contained garcinia.

Consult your doctor as needed. It is generally believed that the isolated case was due to either the combination of other ingredients all together, and that the garcinia cambogia extract side effects to the liver are not an issue when taking at the recommended doses.

          Garcinia Cambogia Gives You Constipation?

aiMIWaZ43pflOne of the possible side effects of Garcinia Cambogia could be constipation. We haven’t found this to be a major complaint.

In fact, in the 15+ clinical studies with over 900 participants, only very mild reactions were documented include: dizziness, dry mouth, and nausea and diarrhea.

While it’s possible garcinia cambogia extract could make you constipated, it’s not a commonly reported issue. To be honest, it didn’t turn up much in our research.

Even multi-vitamins can make some people feel constipated, as these types of reactions tend to be very person-dependent.
